八字 (bā zì) literally means “eight characters.” Known in English as the Four Pillars of Destiny (四柱命理, sì zhù mìng lǐ), Bazi is one of the oldest and most respected branches of Chinese metaphysics. It transforms the date and time of your birth into a compact chart of eight Chinese characters — two for each of the four pillars — to reveal deep insights about your personality, strengths, challenges, and the rhythms of your life.

Bazi traces its roots back over a thousand years to the Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE), when scholars first systematized the relationship between birth timing and personal destiny. Refined through the Song, Ming, and Qing dynasties, the system evolved into a sophisticated analytical framework used by imperial advisors, scholars, and families across East Asia.

How It Works

A Bazi reading begins with your birth date and time, expressed not in the Western (Gregorian) calendar but in the traditional Chinese sexagenary cycle (干支, gān zhī) — a system that pairs ten Heavenly Stems (天干, tiān gān) with twelve Earthly Branches (地支, dì zhī) to create a sixty-unit repeating cycle.

Your birth year, birth month, birth day, and birth hour are each converted into a pair of one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch. Four pairs, two characters each: that gives you the eight characters — your 八字. Each character carries an elemental quality (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water) and a polarity (Yin or Yang), so your chart is a rich tapestry of elemental relationships, balances, and tensions.

The Chinese calendar system that underpins Bazi is solar-based (following the 节气, jié qì — the 24 Solar Terms) rather than the lunar calendar used for Chinese New Year. This means the start of a new Bazi year is around February 4th (立春, lì chūn — “Start of Spring”), not the Lunar New Year date.

The Four Pillars 四柱

The Day Master 日主

Your Day Master (日主, rì zhǔ) is the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar — the single most important character in your entire chart.
